Top 3 Takeaways:
  1. Amazing Advances in Ultrasound Technology: Ultrasound machines have come a long way, from simple wood stethoscopes to 4D imaging, helping doctors see babies clearly and make better medical decisions.

  2. The Importance of Skillful Use of Forceps: In certain situations, forceps can be a valuable tool for delivering babies safely when a C-section might be risky or take too long. Learning and skill are crucial for their correct use.

  3. Benefits of Modern Practices for Large Families: By avoiding unnecessary initial C-sections, families who want many children can have safer pregnancies and deliveries in the future.

Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Mitchell Bitran, and today, I’m thrilled to share with you some fascinating stories and insights from my father, Dr. Mauricio Bitran, as we explore the incredible changes in the world of medicine, particularly in the field of childbirth, over the years.

Advancements in Ultrasound:

My father started his medical career in a time before ultrasound machines were common. Back then, doctors relied on their hands, a measuring tape, and a wooden stethoscope to check on babies inside their moms. Imagine trying to guess what’s happening inside with just those tools! Nowadays, we have ultrasound machines that can show us live 4D images of babies, even capturing their expressions and movements. It’s like having a special window to see and learn what’s happening with the baby before birth. This technology helps doctors and parents prepare better for a healthy delivery.

A Memorable Story of Twins:

Dad shared an amazing story from his early days at Tulane University about delivering Siamese (or conjoined) twins. The mother arrived without any prenatal care, and it was only during delivery that they discovered the twins were connected at the chest. Back then, without ultrasounds, surprises like this could happen. Although the twins didn’t survive after attempts to separate them, the story highlights how crucial today's prenatal screenings are in preparing for complex births.

Using Forceps Wisely:

Forceps are like special instruments that help guide a baby out when they’re having a hard time during delivery. But they need to be used carefully and only by doctors who know how to use them properly. My dad believes they are crucial in some situations where a quick delivery is necessary to protect both the baby’s and mother’s health, especially if moving quickly is key compared to a longer C-section preparation. Even today, he uses an ultrasound first to check everything before making decisions.

Planning for Bigger Families:

Many families dream of having multiple children, and avoiding unnecessary C-sections allows for safer options in future pregnancies. My dad and I both emphasize how giving mothers a chance for a vaginal delivery, where possible, helps keep future birthing options open. This thoughtfulness in care helps larger families come together safely and happily.

This conversation with my dad showcases not only his immense experience and stories from his long career but also how modern technology and skilled practices make a big difference in ensuring the well-being of mothers and babies. Every advancement in this field allows us to deliver care that’s more thoughtful, informed, and safe.
